Walter James Sutcliffe

Walter James Sutcliffe, son of Elwood Edward and Martha Jane Smith Sutcliffe, was born Aug. 5, 1903, in Butler co., Iowa. He received his education in the rural schools near his home. While a youth, he was baptized in the Plainfield Baptist Church.

On Dec. 24, 1926, he was married to Doris Delila Walsh in Waverly, IA. They established their home and engaged in farming in Butler county. Subsequently they farmed in Chickasaw County, Floyd county, and Butler county. They retired in Clarksville in 1974.

Walter has been a resident of Shell Rock Care Center for about 2 years. It was there he died 1:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, 1988. He reached the age of 85 years, 3 months and 7 days. He was preceded in deth by his parents; his wife, Doris in 1976; a sister, Gladys, Mrs. Will Schafer; and a great granddaughter.

He is survived by 2 sons; Robert E. Sutcliffe, Clarksville and Richard A. Sutcliffe, Eldridge; 2 daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Marjorie) Usher, Aitkin, MN. and Mrs. Laverne (Joyce) Heyer, Waverly; 13 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Wil (Luella) Klunder, Plainfield, Mrs. Walter (Doris) Klunder, Waterloo and Mrs. Leonard (Bethel) Schmidt, Waverly.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday Dec. 5, 1988 at the First Baptist church Plainfield, with Reb. Robert Hanthourn officiating. Roberta Nieman was organist and the Congregation sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages". Casketbearers were Gregg Sutcliffe, James Sutcliffe, Randy Usher, Brian Heyer, David Heyer and Steven Warta. Honorary casketbearers were Duane Schmadeke, and Harold Wyatt. Interment followed in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield, Iowa.

Schwarts Funeral Home in Clarksvile was in charge of arrangements.
