Larry John Rhiner, 77, of Tulsa, Okla., died Oct. 17, 2014. he was born in Des Moines, July 15, 1937, and adopted by Roy Albert Rhiner and Elizabeth Ann Van Leuvan Rhiner. Larry grew up in West Des Moines (Valley Junction) and graduated from Valley High School in 1955. Larry was a plumber/pipe-steamfitter. He worked for several plumbing businesses throughout his lifetime including Rhiner Brothers Plumbing and his own business. He married Leslie Ann O’Dell in 1960. They had six children together. Larry and Leslie divorced in 1978, and he later married Carol Ann Hawn Stodden, formerly of Colfax, on April 15, 1983.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carol; his daughter, Barbara Jo Rhiner; his step-son, Petter Thomas Stodden; and his brother, Edward James Rhiner. He si survived by his sisters-in-law, Linda Rhiner and Norma Jean Warnock; five of his children, Daniel Roy Rhiner of Iowa, John James Rhiner of Illinois, Julie Ann Rhiner of Colorado, Gary Eugene Rhiner of Texas, and David Alan Rhiner of Louisiana; and four of his stepchildren, Margaret Ellen Stodden Ruiz De Jesus of Illinois, Woodworth James Stodden of Washington D.C., Vernon Fred Stodden, Jr. of Iowa, Stephen Joseph Stodden of Oklahoma; as well as numerous grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
A funeral was Nov. 1 at the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock.
The family requests that no flowers be sent to the funeral home and encourage anyone who desires to honor Larry’s memory to contribute to your local food bank in his name.
