Memorial services for Thomas "Gene" Brown, age 89, of Shell Rock, Iowa, will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 25 at the Shell Rock United Methodist Church. His body was cremated. *The obituary does not mention the cemetery.*

Thomas "Gene" Brown, son of Joseph and Ardys (Hartley) Brown, was born February 11, 1923 in Colesburg, Iowa. Mr. Brown graduated from the Waukon High School, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Mary Jean Olson on July 23, 1946 in Waukon, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and Drake University. He was a band director in several Iowa schools, including Bedford and Stuart. He finished his band director career in Waverly-Shell Rock School System, serving from 1950 to 1981. He was a member of the Shell Rock United Methodist Church, where he had previously served as choir director.

Thomas "Gene" Brown died Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Jean; two sons, Steven Brown of Shell Rock, Iowa and David (Cindy) Brown of Iowa City, Iowa; two daughters, Carolyn (Carl) Anthony of Conway, Arkansas, and Susan Brown of Shell Rock, Iowa; two grandchildren, Matthew Brown and Benjamin Brown; a step-granddaughter, Lauren Cothern; and two step-great-grandchildren, Evan Cothern and Aedan Cothern.
