Albert Marvin Thorne, age 93, of New Hartford, Iowa, was born the son of Benjamin and Gertrude (Miller) Thorne on October 21, 1917, near Buck Grove, rural Grundy County, Iowa.

He received his education from country schools in rural Iowa. Albert worked out for local farmers in the area and he did factory work at Headford Foundry in Waterloo, Iowa. He also worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp. and took part in the construction of Beeds Lake Shelter House and Dam.

Albert served in the United States Army Infantry from 1942 to 1945. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theatre and was decorated with three battle stars and the Purple Heart.

On December 31, 1947, Albert was united in marriage with Cena Kappers at Bethel Reformed Church parsonage rural Aplington, Iowa. They made their home north of New Hartford after marriage, and farmed there for 11 years. They moved to a farm west of New Hartford in 1959. Albert and Cena moved into town in New Hartford when they retired from farming in 1997. Albert moved to Parker Place in Parkersburg, Iowa in 2009.

Albert was a member of the New Hartford United Methodist Church where he helped build the Fellowship Hall and enjoyed being a member of the church choir for many years. He was a member of the I.O.O.F., and the New Hartford American Legion post #660 for 43 years.

In his spare time he enjoyed visiting with friends, reading, and crossword puzzles. Albert was a devoted husband, an excellent father, good neighbor and enjoyed helping others whenever needed. He enjoyed all of the family get-togethers, especially on the farm.

Albert died Sunday, February 6, 2011, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa, of natural causes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cena Thorne on March 23, 2005; his parents; seven brothers, one in infancy, Vernie, Benjamin, James, Robert, Elmer, Fredrick and Delos; and one sister, Sophie Adelmund.

Albert is survived by three daughters, Mary (John) Dawkins of Boone, IA, Jean (Bob) Eich of Cedar Falls, IA, and Phyllis (Leon) Boelts of Wellsburg, IA; one son, Mark (Jenny) Thorne of Parkersburg, IA; two grandsons, Ryan and Marshall McCalley; one great-granddaughter, Haleigh McCalley; two brothers, Clifford (Doreen) Thorne of Parkersburg, IA, and George Thorne of Chicago, IL; and two sisters-in-law, Gert Thorne of Parkersburg, IA, and Arlene Thorne of Allison, IA.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the New Hartford United Methodist Church, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, both in New Hartford.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg,
