GREENE: Funeral services for Glen Eugene Skillen, 81, formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating.

Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, with military honors conducted by the Tack-Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 3, 2010, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene with a prayer service at
7:30 p.m.

Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Glen Eugene Skillen was born July 30, 1929, in Greene, Butler Co., Iowa the son of Clyde and Maggie (Menken) Skillen and died Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison, Allison, Iowa.

Glen Eugene Skillen received his education in the Coldwater Township Country School. He had a special pony, as a boy, which he rode to school daily. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1951 where he served with the 9404 STU Regiment. Glen was honorably discharged in 1952.

He was united in marriage to Verna Loretta Schoolcraft on January 14, 1951, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Charles City. They made their home on the Skillen family farm west of Greene where they were blessed with two sons. He was baptized in 1945 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene where he has been a member since 1964.

He drove a truck for the Bristow Elevator hauling grain and livestock to the Rath Packing Plant in Waterloo. Glen drove a milk truck for Carnation from 1954 - 1962. He drove a truck for the Greene Creamery from 1962-1964. He was hired for a part-time position at the Greene Farmers Cooperative in 1964 which turned into a full time position in 1966. Glen worked for the COOP until his retirement in 1992. During those 26 years of employment he never had an accident and was honored with 26 Safe Driver Awards.

Glen lived all his life within a couple miles of his birth place. Most of his travels were around the area to farm shows. Glen and his son David traveled to Anchorage, Alaska, where they enjoyed a two week vacation. Glen also traveled to the Grand National Tractor Pull in Tomah, Wisconsin for 28 years and visited the National Farm Machinery Show & Tractor Pull in Louisville, Kentucky. He loved to swing in his swing on the farm and smoke his pipe. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles. Glen liked to bowl and was on the Lutheran Church Bowling League in the 60's. He loved to pitch horseshoes and was a stranger to no one. Glen was a life long member of the Cedar Valley Engine Club.

Living family members include two sons: David Skillen of Greene, Jason Skillen of Greene; many cousins.

Glen was preceded in death by his wife Verna; and his parents.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Glen Skillen Memorial Fund, 1198 Grand Ave, Greene, IA 50636

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene.
