Mabel M. Haan, age 99, formerly of Parkersburg, died Friday, October 15, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, from natural causes.

She was born the daughter of Emanual E. and Hannah M. (Polk) Hanawalt on December 25, 1910, in rural Butler County, Dumont, Iowa.

Mabel received her education and graduated from the Dumont High School. She continued her education at the Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she received her teacher’s certificate. Mabel taught rural country school near her home for two years. She made profession of Christian faith and to be saved on January 31, 1931. Mabel was baptized in June of 1931 and became a member of the Baptist Church.

Mabel was united in marriage with Fred Haan on April 26, 1936, in Grundy Center, Iowa. They made their home and farmed in the Butler County area. The majority of the time they lived and farmed on family farm north of Aplington. In 1989 they moved to Parkersburg following retirement. Mabel became a resident of the Maple Manor Village in Aplington in 2007.

Mabel was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg. Through the years Mabel enjoyed crocheting afghans, spending much of her spare time quilting for her family and made each grandchild a special quilt of their very own. She also enjoyed gardening and especially loved African Violets. Every fall Mabel picked apples from their orchard and made wonderful apple pies for everyone to enjoy.

Mabel died Friday, October 15, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington of natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Haan on February 28, 2002; her parents; two grandchildren, baby boy Moye and Marjori L. Haus; four sisters, Edith, Viola, Erma and Lilla; and two brothers, Merlin and Nilas.

Mabel is survived by four daughters, Faylene (Melvin) Mohring in Plainfield, Iowa, Margaret Nisley of Omaha, Nebraska, Evelyn (James) Miller of Osage, Iowa, and Blythe Gienau of Janesville, Iowa;13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; and 7 step-grandchildren; one brother, Joe (Vivian) Hanawalt of Meservey, Iowa; one sister, Nina Mulder of Waverly, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 18, 2010, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg.

Burial will be held in Hitesville Cemetery, rural Aplington.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.
