Verna Mae “Shorty” Cain, age 73, of Shell Rock, died Friday, January 4th, 2008 at the Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls.

Shorty was born on July 8, 1934 in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Gladys Klunder Stobbe.

She was raised and educated in Clarksville and graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1952. Shorty fell in love with Don while dancing at Jacks Dance Land in Clarksville. On October 2, 1955 Shorty was united in marriage to Don Cain in Clarksville, Iowa. The couple settled in Shell Rock where Shorty worked at Blunt’s Grocery and Dana’s Grocery for twenty years. Verna also provided home daycare until retiring in 1992. Her hobbies included fishing, canning, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. Every year Shorty enjoyed entertaining relatives and friends at their home and in their yard during the Fourth of July celebration.

Shorty’s memory is honored by her husband Don Cain of Shell Rock, her mother, Gladys Stobbe of Clarksville, a daughter-in-law, Tammy (Kurt) Treloar of Waverly, a son, Kevin Cain of Polk City, three grandchildren, Ali and Madi Cain and Carter Treloar all of Waverly, a brother, Dave (Merna) Stobbe of Shell Rock, an aunt, Arlene Klunder of Clarksville, an uncle, Alvin Klunder of Greene, a niece, Lisa (Tim) Schliebe, five nephews, Jeff (Kristy) Cain and their children Mackenzie and Breanna, Christopher (Tammy) Cain, Dennis (Judy) Cain, Shannon (Traci) Stobbe and their children Emma, Isaac, and Jenna, and Chad (Micole) Stobbe and their children William and Ella.

Her stepfather Arthur Stobbe preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Steven McGinley officiating.

Verna will then be cremated and there will be a private family burial on Saturday, January 12 at the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock.

Visiting hours will begin on Tuesday, January 8 at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock where the family will greet friends from 5 until 8 PM that evening and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

A memorial has been established to Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock.
