Carlys Lee "Speed" Nieman, age 71, of Shell Rock, died Monday, July 14, 2008 at his home.

Carlys was born on February 9, 1937 in rural Shell Rock, Iowa the son of Carl and Nellie De Witt Nieman.

He attended country school and later the Shell Rock High School. On September 1, 1957 Carlys was united in marriage to Marlys Shaffer at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. They made their home in Shell Rock and Carlys spent his life as an equipment operator working for Polmateer – Fishel for 2 years, Greene Limestone for 7yrs, Diesch in Waterloo, and in 1967 joined the Operators Union becoming a Union Crane Operator where he ran the crane constructing several big bridge projects across the state. Carlys' enjoyments included his acreage on the river north of Shell Rock where he could tinker in his shop, enjoy his tractors, and work on small engines. Carlys was very proud of his grandchildren and loved spending time with them.

Carlys' memory is honored by his wife Marlys of Shell Rock, a son, Randy (Debbie) Nieman of Buckingham, a daughter, Carla (LeRoy) Rops of Shell Rock, four grandchildren, Clay Nieman of Waterloo, Anna Nieman of Omaha, NE, and Sara and Tyler Rops of Shell Rock, three brothers, Michael (Laura), Dennis (Maria), and Steve (Rachel) Nieman all of Shell Rock, and two sisters, Connie Rust of Shell Rock and Nancy Bauler of Le Center, MN.

Carlys was preceded in death by his parents.

Carlys has been cremated and memorial services will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, July 19 at the United Methodist Church in Shell Rock.

Friends may visit one hour prior to the service.

A private family burial will occur at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
