George Porter Green

George Porter Green, 79, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Waverly Health Center.

George was born on January 29, 1930 in Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of George P. and Edith (Miller) Green Sr.

He attended Shell Rock High and graduated in 1948. After high school he entered the United States Navy and served from 1951-1954 during the Korean Conflict in the Sea of Japan. He was united in marriage to Lavon Rodenbeck on June 10, 1956 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa. He farmed southwest of Shell Rock, near Norton's Corner until 1964. He attended drafting school and was a draftsman for Schield-Bantam and later was a draftsman at John Deere for 10 years. He returned to farming until his retirement.

He was a member of Shell Rock American Legion, Cedar Valley Polka Club and the John Deere Two Cylinder Club. He enjoyed polka music, antique tractors, sailing on Lake Cornelia, photography and feeding and watching birds. He played in the Alpiner's Polka Band from Waterloo and together they played at many Polka fests and events throughout the Midwest. George especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. George and Lavon were charter members of Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. They were the first couple married in the congregation.

He is survived by his wife, Lavon of Shell Rock, Iowa; three sons, Jeff Green and his wife, Cindy of Nampa, Idaho; Tim Green of Shell Rock, Iowa; and Dave Green and his wife, Lori of Shell Rock, Iowa; two grandsons, Nate Gibbs and Michael Green; one sister, Ramona Wedeking of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ted Jurgens.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 20, 2009 at 11:00 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, Iowa.

George will be cremated following the service and burial of his cremains will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock.

Memorials may be directed to the Faith Lutheran Church, Shell Rock.
