Dale C. Winkey, 82, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday evening, September 23, 2009, following a lengthy illness.

Dale was born on December 19, 1926, in Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of Justin C. and Grace (Harms) Winkey. Dale was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. He attended country school in rural Butler County and Shell Rock High School where he graduated in 1944. Dale served his country in the U.S. Army from May 22, 1945 until he was honorable discharged on March 7, 1946. Dale returned home and began farming. On June 28, 1952, Dale was united in marriage to Shirley Lorraine Lund at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. The couple made their home in rural Shell Rock, where Dale farmed for all of his life.

Dale was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. Dale had a passion for farming and riding and driving horses, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially 500 and Rummy.

Dale is survived by his loving wife of over 56 years, Shirley of Shell Rock, Iowa; his two daughters; Becky Winkey (Bruce Jensen) of Waverly, Iowa; Ellen Doese (David) of Fairbank, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Linda Hamilton (William) of Waverly, Iowa; 6 grandchildren; Jon, Brenten and Sarah Doese, Katie Schwartz (Dave), Stacy and Dannie Hamilton; two great grandchildren, Quinton and Amri Schwartz; a brother-in-law, Donald Lund (Darlene) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a sister-in-law, Janice Smith (Edice) of Madison, Tennessee.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Chuck Winkey, a brother, Wayne Winkey, a sister, Rosalie Winkey in infancy and a brother-in-law, Richard Lund.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 28, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, with Pastor Kim Smith officiating.

Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post #393 of Shell Rock.

Public visitation will be held on Sunday, September 27th from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock and also for an hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church Good Samaritan Fund, Cedar Valley Hospice or the Salvation Army.
