Edwin Meyer, age 83, of Aplington, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, from complication of COPD.

He was born February 28, 1926, the son of George J. and Rina Mennen Meyer on the family farm near Aplington in Butler County, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from Aplington High School in 1943.

Eddie was united in marriage with Paulene Brinkman on August 28, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The first years of their marriage, the couple made their home in Kesley, and Eddie worked in the elevator and the Aplington Sales Barn. They moved to the farm north of Aplington and started farming in 1950. He continued to work at the sales barn for over 30 years. In 1978 due to back problems, he quit farming and went to work for Hippen Motors and then Bruns Motor of Aplington as a parts and warranty manager, retiring in1991. They moved to their present home in Aplington in 1982.

He attended Bethel Reformed Church in Aplington. Eddie loved working with cattle and had the Grand Champion Black Angus Calf at the Butler County Fair in 1946. He enjoyed the simple life including fishing excursions with the family. They enjoyed trips to visit their family on special occasions plus traveling to Germany, Alaska and went on a cruise for their 40th anniversary.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Paulene in 2002; son-in-law, Curtis Martens; two sisters, Fannie Meyer and Ann Uhlenhopp; sister-in-law, Gladys Meyer; two brothers-in-law, Martin Uhlenhopp and Richard Williams.

Eddie is survived by one son, Alan (Arlene) Meyer, Aplington and one daughter, Dianne Martens, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two grandchildren, Tamera (Scott) Pieper, and April (Jeff) Ogle, four great-grandchildren, Brandon and Jessica Ohrnstein, Meaghan Ogle and Taylor Pieper; one brother, Oscar Meyer, Aplington and one sister-in-law, Betty Williams, Allison and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 4 at Bethel Reformed Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both rural Aplington, Iowa.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m., Wednesday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington and one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
