Dorothy E. Parsons, 91, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died early Saturday morning, April 10, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of natural causes.

Dorothy was born on June 14, 1918, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Edith (McCann) Mooney. Dorothy attended school in Waverly, graduating from the Waverly High School in 1936 and was then employed by Northwestern Bell until 1938. On November 17, 1938, she was united in marriage to James Parsons Jr., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly. The couple made their home in Shell Rock where they were members of Holy Name Catholic Church, later becoming members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly. Jim died on May 5, 1997, and Dorothy continued to live in Shell Rock until April 1, 2010, when she became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Dorothy was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly and also a member of the Shell Rock American Legion Post #393 Auxiliary. In her spare time, Dorothy enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, bowling, playing cards, bird watching and anything that had to do with the outdoors (especially the river). But most of all, Dorothy loved spending time with her family.

Dorothy is survived by her four children and their spouses; Mary Jo (Jerry) Barnholdt of Burlington, Iowa, Jane Arjes of Redfield, Iowa, Steve (Joyce) Parsons of Conroy, Iowa, Patricia (Walter) Starkey of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Mary Kay (Bill) Hansen of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and one brother, James Mooney of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; two brothers, Joseph and John Mooney; one son-in-law, Terry Arjes; and a granddaughter.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly, with Rev. Mike Tauke presiding.

Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Waverly.

Public visitation will be held on Monday, April 12th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a public scripture service at 7:00 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock.

Memorials may be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church, Shell Rock American Legion Auxiliary or the donor's choice.
