Lorene Elizabeth Johnson passed away October 5, 2004 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East Campus, Mason City, Iowa having reached the age of 80 years, 9 months, and 29 days. She was born December 6, 1923, at the Deetz farm in Chickasaw County, Iowa, to William Martin & Leta Engel (Fedeler) Deetz. Lorene attended Bridge Country School. She married Melvin James Thompson on March 27, 1940 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Stapleton, Iowa. Melvin passed away on April 26, 1952. She then married Charles Henry Johnson on August 10, 1954 in Sprindale, Arkansas. Chuck passed away on July 28, 1984. When first married, Lorene worked on a truck farm growing and selling vegetables in Arizona and Arkansas. She then worked several years at a chicken processing plant in Roger, Arkansas. In Iowa, she worked as a Nurse Aide for many years in Hampton and Rockwell. Lorene enjoyed working outdoors, especially working with flowers, reading, and baking. Lorene was known for taking care of any stray cat that happened her way. Spending time with her family was most important to her. She was known to her family and friends as “Grandma Chuck”. She is survived by her three daughters: Marie and husband Stan Bridges of Hampton, Sarah Mae and husband James Sargent of Indianola, Sharron Kay and husband Robert Meyer of Dumont; a son: Melvin and wife Lori Thompson of Demorest, Georgia; two step-sons: Terry and wife Darla Drewelow of Parkersburg and Bruce and wife Beth Drewelow of Evansdale; two brothers Vern Deetz of Charles City and Arnold and wife Grace Deetz of Charles City; a sister: Marion Franzen of Ft. Atkinson; ten grandchildren (+Keshia); two step-grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one sister Corrine, one brother Leo, grandson Vincent Fielding and step-granddaughter Becky Drewelow. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Bristow Church of Christ with Brother Marvin Platt officiating. Special music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Hans Terrill. The flower committee was Maxine Bushbaum and Lila Winkowitsch. Ushers were Bill Beadle and Raymond Grapp. Pallbearers were L. D. Griner, Hans Terrill, Gary Bierman, John Bushbaum, Kevyn Mumaw and Benjamin Franken. Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Winkowitsch and Tyler Mumaw Honor Guard by the Mason City Fire Department. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
