Clarence E. Mead, age 74, of Aplington, Iowa, was born in Butler County, Iowa, the son of William C. Mead and Fannie Lindaman Mead Cole, on December 1, 1929. He attended Kesley and Aplington Schools. He served in the United States Marine Corp 1951-1953 (13 months of which he served in combat in the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division). Upon returning from the Marine Corp, he resumed work at the Rath Packing Company, Waterloo, Iowa. Clarence was united in marriage with Catherine Heddinger on February 8, 1954, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, Iowa. In 1956, he and his wife moved to Kesley at which time he was a salesman for Morman Manufacturing Company. He later took the position of Postmaster at the Kesley Post Office from 1960–1962. In 1969 he also was in partnership with his brother, Gloy Mead in the Dike Grocery. He later started the Mead Roofing Business. In 1977 he and his wife moved to Aplington where he continued to operate the Mead Roofing Business and also had a rental business which he owned and managed. Due to health reasons he later retired from the roofing business. He was a member of the Kesley Amvets and a previous member of Dumont Bowling where he was a league member. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. On March 6, 2004, Clarence died at his home in Aplington of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Clifford Mead Clarence is survived by his wife, Catherine; two daughters, Deb (Mark) Blythe of Aplington and Julie Devine of Clear Lake, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jeff Blythe, Nikki Blythe, Angela Devine, Missy Devine and Langdon Devine; one great grandchild, Jadyn Devine; three brothers, Paul (Barb) Mead of New Hartford, Richard (Mary) Mead of Waterloo, Gloy (Rosalie) Mead of Cedar Falls; a sister, Darlene Cook of Des Moines, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Mead of Cedar Falls. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Greg Smith officiating. Organist was Leneé Pollock. Vocalist Russell Meyer sang “How Great Thou Art.” Special Music was “Angel.” Congregational Hymns were “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Scott Mead, Jim Eckhoff, Edward Kugel, Dave Krejchi, Rod Mead and Brian Mead. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa with Full Military Rites by the Kesley AMVETS. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
