D. W. Mason was admitted (to the bar) about the same time (1859). He was a native of New York, came to Butler county young, with his parents, who settled near Butler Center. He was engaged in mercantile and real estate business at Butler Center, and from there removed to Shell Rock, where he lived at the time of his admission to the bar. He was the first superintendent of schools of Butler county, having a good general education, but did not make a success of the profession of law. He went to the war, and on his return removed to Missouri, where he has since served a term as judge.
