July 22, 1908 - July 27, 2010

Harriet L. Swenson, age 102, of Albert City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2010, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home at Albert City, Iowa, with her daughters, Sonya and Sandy, by her side.

Harriet Lorraine Jafvert, the daughter of William and Anna (Olson) Jafvert, was born at Chicago, Illinois, on July 22, 1908. At the age of 9, Harriet moved with her family to Albert City where she lived her youth and received her education. Harriet was a graduate of the Albert City High School.

On October 1, 1930, Harriet was united in marriage to Bertil Benna and this couple was blessed with two daughters: Sonya and Sandra.

In 1940, Harriet and Bertil moved to the Minneapolis area where Harriet worked in the clothing department of Dayton’s department store. She later worked in the billing departments of the Lutheran Bible Institute and the St. Louis Park Medical Center.

They returned to Albert City in 1972 to enjoy their retirement years. Bertil died in November of 1974. In June, 1979, Harriet married Gus Swenson and he passed away in 1980.

Harriet moved to the Countryside Living in Albert City in April of 2004 and later to the Pleasant View Home where she spent the remainder of her years.

Harriet was a member of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Albert City where she was very active in all of the church’s activities. She also belonged to the Golden Rule Club. Harriet was a very well traveled person and enjoyed memorable international trips to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, and France. Other special places Harriet enjoyed visiting were Door County, Wisconsin, the north shore of Lake Superior, and the northwest coast.

Harriet’s memory will always be cherished by her daughters: Sonya and her husband, Karl Larsen, of Iowa City, IA, and Sandra Clausen of Salt Lake City, UT, her granddaughters: Anne Larsen of Iowa City, IA, and Sara (Chris) Reikersdorfer of Madison, WI, her grandsons: Sam (Mary) Larsen of Lone Tree, IA, and Tom (Diana) Larsen of Iowa City, IA, nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Bertil and Gus, her brothers: Lester, Ray, Floyd, and Glen, and her sisters: Vivian, Marian, and Florence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Harriet’s name to the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Pleasant View Home for the loving care they provided Harriet.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
