Helen E. Thomsen, age 95, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital at Spencer, Iowa.

Helen Elizabeth Cleveland, the daughter of Roy and Mabelle (Evans) Cleveland, was born in Douglas Township in Clay County, Iowa, on October 31, 1914.

She lived her youth and received her education in Linn Grove where she graduated from the Linn Grove High School at the age of 16. She continued her education at Buena Vista College where she received her teaching degree. Helen also took classes and studied piano at Northwestern University in Chicago.

On July 11, 1946, Helen was united in marriage to Norman G. Thomsen at the Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove. This couple was blessed with three children: Gene, Mary Lou and Paul. In addition to being a loving and devoted wife and mother, Helen also taught school in the communities of Royal, Linn Grove, Ruthven, Spencer, Fort Dodge, Downers Grove, IL, and in the Clay Central School District.

Following their marriage, they owned and operated a grocery store in Rembrandt, Iowa, for several years and then moved to their farm near Linn Grove where they spent most of their married life together.

Helen was a faithful member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal and also of the Riverside Presbyterian Church more recently. She was also an avid golfer and achieved two “hole-in-one” in her lifetime. Helen always raised a large garden and was meticulous about not having any weeds in her garden. She and Norman also enjoyed dancing together and the 20 winters they resided in Arizona.

Helen’s memory will always be loved, honored, and cherished by her family which include her children: Gene and Kathy Thomsen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mary Lou Hugen of Sioux City, Iowa; and Paul and Sheila Thomsen of Linn Grove, Iowa; her grandchildren: Mark (Lisa) Thomsen, Jon Thomsen, Dirk Hugen, Erin Hugen, Alex (Leslie) Hugen, Joshua and Matthew Hugen, Jada Thomsen, Tyler (Jennifer) Thomsen, Kalli (Wes) Hunt, and Courtney Thomsen; other extended family members and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman, on May 30, 2009; her brother, Jack Cleveland; and her sister, Ruth Ann Russell.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove. Burial will be in the Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m., Friday, August 6, 2010, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids where the family will be present to greet friends.

The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given in Helen’s name for the Praise Team at the Riverside Presbyterian Church.
