Edna D. Brummer, age 97, of Albert City, Iowa, died Friday, May 09, 2008, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.
Edna Dorothea Bertha (Hogrefe) Brummer was born on her parent’s farm in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, on August 30, 1910, the daughter of John and Amanda (Hartje) Hogrefe. She was the first of six children.
Edna was baptized September 18, 1910, at Zion Lutheran Church. She attended Zion Parochial School until the age of 13 before dropping out. Edna was confirmed on April 13, 1924. She chose as her confirmation verse, Revelation 3:20.
On January 29, 1937, Edna was united in marriage to Oscar Brummer at St. John’s United Church of Christ, rural Newell, Iowa. It was a double wedding ceremony shared with Oscar’s twin brother, Arvin Brummer and Edna’s sister, Hilda Hogrefe. The couple was blessed with two children: Robert and Ronald.
Edna and Oscar spent their entire married life on a farm in Buna Vista County from 1937 until his death in June 1984. She liked being outdoors helping Oscar with the crops and chores. For many years she tended to a garden and raised a flock of ducks, which she dressed out in the late fall.
Edna enjoyed watching game shows and ball games on television, listening to polka music, playing cards, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She did a lot of baking, especially bread, cinnamon rolls, coffee cakes and cookies, which she generously shared with her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Robert Brummer and wife Dorothy Ann of Albert City; one granddaughter, Kerry and husband Brian Amendt of Spencer, Iowa; two great-grandchildren: Tyler and Erica Amendt; one sister, Mabel Zeman of Storm Lake; two sisters-in-law: Delores Hogrefe of Lowell, Arkansas, and Gretel Brummer of Storm Lake; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, John and Amanda Hogrefe; husband, Oscar Brummer; her infant son, Ronald; two sisters: Hilda Brummer and Lilly Sievers; and two brothers: Emil and Elmer Hogrefe.
