Walter Buchholz - Jan. 31, 1924 - Jan. 21, 2007

Walter Buchholz, age 82, of Truesdale, Iowa, died Sunday, January 21, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Walter Henry Buchholz was born January 31, 1924, to Fred and Ida (Hartje) Buchholz in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake and was later confirmed at Zion as a youth. He received his education at the Zion Lutheran parochial school through the eighth grade.

On September 28, 1947, Wally was united in marriage to Leone Elizabeth Gaes at Zion Lutheran Church. The couple was blessed with eight children: Steven, Stuart, Stanley, Brian, Barrie, Bradley, Phillip and Shelly. Wally and Leone lived a happy life, raising their family on a farm northeast of Storm Lake. Wally loved working the land and farmed his entire life, retiring after 60 years as a farmer. In 1991, Wally and Leone moved to Truesdale. After 56 wonderful years of marriage, Leone died on January 21, 2004, exactly three years to the day of Wally’s death.

Wally loved the Lord and lived his faith as a lifelong, faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. He was community-minded and served as a special deputy sheriff in Buena Vista County. Wally was an active and involved family man who loved to follow his children in their activities when they were youngsters. Since he was a sports fan himself, Wally especially enjoyed going to the kids’ and grandkids’ ballgames. He was an avid Chicago White Sox baseball fan and seldom, if ever, missed a game on television. In fact, before games were broadcast on TV, Wally would sit in the car to listen to the White Sox games, driving if necessary to find a location with good reception so he missed none of the action. Wally also loved to bowl and participated in local leagues for many years. He heartily enjoyed camping, and he and Leone camped as often as they could find the time. Wally also thrived on the opportunity to play a good game of cards with his sisters. A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Wally kept family at the heart of his life. He treasured any time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and their families. His endearing presence and enthusiasm for life will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Barrie (Charles) Black of Council Bluffs, Iowa; four sons: Stanley (Kathy) Buchholz , Brian Buchholz, Bradley Buchholz and Phillip (Darcy) Buchholz, all of Truesdale; five granddaughters: Shelly, Rachel and husband Ben, Megan and fiancé Brian, Stephanie and fiancé Ronnie, and Bridget; four grandsons: Daniel, Cole, Matthew and Austin; two great-granddaughters: Emilie and Alyssia; three great-grandsons: C.J., Noah and Steven; four sisters: Dora Kruse, Alma “Shorty” Boettcher, Leona Boettcher, and Lea Gaes, all of Storm Lake; two sisters-in-law: Betty Jean (Jim) Peterson of Newell, Iowa, and Marilou (Dale) Rude of Sioux City, Iowa; one brother-in-law, James Gaes of Storm Lake; many nieces and nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leone; two sons, Steven and Stuart; his daughter, Shelly; one grandson, Joshua Black; two brothers, Arthur and Raymond; one sister, Paula Madison; six brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; two nephews; and two great-nephews.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, January 25, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake with Reverend Stephen Kieser officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in rural Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2007, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present.
