Mary McKenna - Dec. 14, 1919 - Aug. 11, 2003

Mrs. Melvin (Mary) McKenna, age 83, of Storm Lake died on August 11, 2003, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Mary Cecelia Wright was born on December 14, 1919, to Clarence and Nellie (McCabe) Wright at Sulphur Springs, Iowa. She was baptized on Christmas Eve of 1919 at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake where she later was confirmed. As a child Mary attended Providence Township school near Sulphur Springs, and she graduated from high school there in 1938.

Mary and John Melvin McKenna were married on May 26, 1942, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. They celebrated 61 years together in May of this year. Their union was blessed with a son and four daughters.

Mary will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who spent her life as a homemaker caring for her family. She was sustained by her great devotion to her faith and was a member and former officer of the Parish Guild as well as a member of the Catholic Daughters at St. Mary’s. Mary enjoyed crafts and playing cards, was a member of her card clubs and also of the Hayes Farmers Club. She truly loved music of all kinds; Mary played the clarinet and delighted in dancing, cherishing special memories of dancing at the Cobblestone Ballroom in Storm Lake. Mary also took great pleasure in sharing coffee and good conversation with friends and family at the Lakeshore Café.

Mrs. McKenna is survived by her children, John McKenna of Iowa City and special friend Pam Rugger of Des Moines, Michelle Sandhoff and husband Darrald of Schaller, Patti Grindle and husband John of Jerricho, VT, Jacqueline Homampour and husband Houshang of Evanston, IL, and Colette Fischer and husband Bill of Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Michael and Yvonne Sandhoff, John, Bridget and David Sandhoff, John, Patrick and Justin Grindle, Alicia, Sean and Ashley Homampour, and Elizabeth and Eric Fischer; great-grandchildren Joseph and Jessica Sandhoff; brother Jerry Wright and wife Ruth of Storm Lake; and sisters Pat Carney of Sacramento, CA, and Gwen LeMer of Sacramento, CA; sister-in-law Elaine Wright; brother-in-law F. J. Carney; and nephew Scott Johnson, along with many extended family members and friends.

Mrs. McKenna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin, sister Joanne Ryan, brothers Joe Wright and Gerard Wright; and brothers-in-law, Chuck Carney, Patrick Johnson and Ben LeMer.

Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, August 14, 2003, at 2:00 p.m at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Reverends Timothy Schott and Bruce Lawler as concelebrants. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 13, 2003, after 3:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present. There will be a 3:30 Legion of Mary Rosary and a Vigil Service at 7:30.
