Harold D. Bloom - Nov. 16, 1914 - Apr. 13, 2005

Harold D. Bloom, age 90, of Albert City, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Harold David Bloom was born on November 16, 1914, in Bancroft, Nebraska, to David and Hilda (Carlson) Bloom. He lived with his family in the Pender and Concord, Nebraska, areas, attending school through the eighth grade in rural Concord. He was baptized as an infant in the Pender, NE, Covenant Church and confirmed in the Concord, NE, Free Church.

During the 1930’s, Harold was back and forth between his Nebraska home and Albert City. At times, he helped Albert City farmers with corn harvest. Other years, he worked the Bloom family farm in Nebraska.

His family moved to Albert City in 1938. He arrived in Albert City shortly thereafter and met and married Lorraine Loving on March 3, 1941, in her parent’s home on their farm near Albert City. They were blessed with three daughters: Alice, Ione and Elaine. They farmed in the Albert City area and moved to the current farm with their family in the fall of 1959.

Traveling was always part of Harold and Lorraine’s life. Together, they regularly visited their three daughters whether they were in Michigan, Illinois, California, Maryland or Australia. They also often attended extended family’s events on both sides. Family was very import to Harold.

Harold was active in the community. He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church where he served in various capacities. For many years, he served in various positions on the board of the Cooperative Elevator. He was also a member of the board for Pleasant View Home and a member of the Lion’s Club.

In addition, Harold was sexton of Fairfield Township Cemetery until the time of his death. He would enlist the help of his grandsons and grand nephews for mowing and trimming the cemetery grounds in the summer. When time allowed, Harold enjoyed playing a round or two of golf.

Survivors include his wife Lorraine of Albert City; daughters: Alice (Keith) Johnson of Marquette, Michigan, Ione (Brian) Linke of Rockville, Maryland, and Elaine (Jim) Ahlberg of Rochelle, Illinois; seven grandchildren: Chris (Becky) Johnson, Andy Johnson, Michael (Kelli) Linke, Alex Linke, Alarich Linke, Matt Ahlberg and Erik Ahlberg; three great grandchildren: Hannah Johnson, Shelby Johnson and Holden Linke; brothers Herbert Bloom of California and Clarence Bloom of Minnesota; sisters Florence Carlson of Minnesota and Vivian Sundblad of Albert City, Iowa; and other extended family and friends.

Preceding Harold in death are his parents, David and Hilda Bloom.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 18, 2005 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City with Pastor Galvin Ellis officiating. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2005 at Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City where the family will be present.
