Alice G. Carlson
January 15, 1919 ~ July 29, 2018 (age 99)Alice Carlson, age 99, of Spencer, Iowa, died on July 29, 2018, in Spencer.
The third of nine children of Emma (Zeman) and George Lovrien, Alice was born on January 15, 1919, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. In 1936, she graduated from Linn Grove High School. She met Donald Carlson while working at his family’s grocery store. They married on February 27, 1938. In time, they were blessed with four children: Mary Lee, David, James, and Julie.
Alice and Don farmed together for fifty years in Linn Grove, Iowa, subsequently buying four farms and renovating and/or building houses, barns, and other structures on each property. Alice’s children remember her working alongside Don and even driving the combine or tractor when the need arose. By example, she taught her children the value of hard work and the importance of dedication to family and community. Friends and neighbors, often, saw her out in her garden weeding and picking produce. She would pickle, can, or freeze, and her kitchen was always filled with delicious breads, other foods, and treats. She had a tradition of hosting Sunday meals for family members and close friends who were able to come, a tradition that her children have continued regularly with their own families. Alice could pull together dinner for large crowd with ease and enjoyed gathering everyone together to socialize and have a wonderful meal.
Over the years, Alice played a role in several organizations. An active member of her church and community for many years, she, along with Don, belonged to and attended the Riverside Presbyterian Church. There, she participated in the Ladies’ Circle, the Ladies’ Aid, and AWANA. Moreover, she taught Sunday School and sang duets and trios for various occasions and in the choir with her wonderful alto voice. Moreover, an active member of the Women’s Federated Club, she, willingly, provided meals, flowers, and vegetables to anyone in need in the community. She knit baby blankets for her great grandchildren along with thousands of mittens and scarves for whoever wanted or needed them. Many babies were adorned with her booties as well.
Later in life, Alice moved to Riverview Assisted Living in Spencer, Iowa, where she enjoyed singing, participating in the bell choir, square dancing, studying the Bible, and worshiping at chapel. In addition, she loved visiting with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She, also, loved that two of her sisters lived close by and that she could visit them often.
Alice will be remembered for her wonderful hugs and kisses, good humor, unmistakable laugh, and her love of the Lord. She infected every member of her family with the love that she showered on her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great- great grandchildren.
Alice is survived by her children - Mary Lee (Melvin) Meyers, of Linn Grove Iowa, David (Norma) Carlson, of Iowa City Iowa, James Carlson (special friend Natalie Stumbo), of Fargo North Dakota, and Julie (Torrey) Carlblom, of Saint Peter, Minnesota; and her siblings: Gladys Zwiefel, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Hope Leonard, of Sac City, Iowa, and Helen Porter and Shirley (Ray) Ohrtman, both of Spencer, Iowa, Glen (Pat) Lovrien, of Glendale, California, and Bob Lovrien, of Rockford Illinois; as well as by fourteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don; her sisters, Inez Lauritsen and Ruth Lovrien; her brothers-in-law: Delbert Williams, Lester Lauritsen, Clair Pelley, Bob Zweifel, Ted Leonard, and Howard Porter; and her sister-in-law, Corabelle “Susie” Lovrien.
