June 16, 1949 - April 11, 2017

Donald E. Petersen, age 67, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Newell, Iowa, died on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix.

Donald Eugene Petersen, a son of Eugene and LaVada (Miller) Petersen, was born on June 16, 1949, in Storm Lake, Iowa. He attended grade school in Sulphur Springs, Iowa, and graduated from Newell Providence High School in 1967. After attending classes at Buena Vista College, he completed his education at the Land Surveying Center in Phoenix. Subsequently, he worked as a land surveyor for many years. In addition, he owned and operated both a service station and fuel oil distribution businesses. On March 22, 1969, he married Joan Elaine McClurg in Newell. In due course, they were blessed with three sons: Chris, Tim, and Nick.

Active in various churches in his community, Don, also, joined the National Rifle Association, the BPCR Shooting Club, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Newell Fire Fighters. In his free time, he enjoyed singing in the church choir, gardening, hunting, shooting, and cooking with his Dutch oven. Most of all, however, he loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joan Petersen; his sons: Chris (Sherie), Tim (Jenni), and Nick Petersen; his grandchildren: Cole, Joshua (Bekah), and Kaitley Petersen, and Elizabeth (Ryan) Polston; and his brother, Jon (Joy) Petersen; as well as several sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and LaVada Petersen, and his sister, Leah Franzmeier.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 17, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is overseeing the arrangements.
