Lloyd Dean Richter
July 18, 1947 ~ February 7, 2017 (age 69)

Lloyd D. Richter, age 69, of Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of Storm Lake, passed away on Tuesday, February 07, 2017, at the Iowa Veterans Home of Marshalltown.

Lloyd Richter was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on July 18, 1947, to August and Margaret Richter. After his mother died when he was twelve years old, he was sent to live at the Boys Home in Toledo, Iowa. When he was fifteen, he went to live with a foster family in Ottumwa, Iowa. He, subsequently, graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1967 while living with that foster family.

After graduating, Lloyd joined the armed forces. A Vietnam-era veteran, he served first in the U. S. Air Force from 1970 to 1972 and then in the U. S. Navy from 1973 to 1977, sailing on the USS Voge. On August 25, 1979, he married Ila (Hinkeldey) Swartz at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake Iowa. He and Ila were married for twenty-nine years before her death in November, 2008. Lloyd worked at Bil-Mar Foods as a forklift operator until his retired in 2009.

Lloyd loved to fish. Indeed, he would picnic and fish with his family at the lake any chance he could get. He would spend hours at a time sitting on a dock with his mother-in-law, both with poles in hand. At those times, they, mainly, talked about whether the fish were jumping and if they were going to find the fishing good. A lifelong baseball fan, he, always, cheered for the Yankees. He loved music, particularly Buddy Holly's music, and he loved to dance. He and Ila would, occasionally, find themselves dancing on the living room floor on a Saturday afternoon. In addition, Lloyd enjoyed spending time with friends, and he loved going to the Northside Bar for a beer and a game of snooker on Friday nights.

Although Lloyd had no children of his own, Lloyd loved kids. He became stepfather to two teenagers when he married Ila, and he put up with their teenage antics, which included many experiences with their various friends. Once those teenagers had grown and had children of their own, he, also, loved playing the role of grandpa.

Lloyd is survived by his stepdaughter, Heather Perkins, of Molalla, Oregon; his stepson, Ralph (Nancy) Swartz, of Lancaster, Ohio; his grandchildren: Robert Swartz, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Sarah (Jeremy) Taylor, of Lancaster Ohio, and Grace Perkins, of Irving Texas; his sisters-in-law, Judy Hinkeldey, of Alta, Iowa, and Mary Davis, of Topeka, Kansas; his foster sister, Nancy Morrow, of Ottumwa, Iowa; and his foster brother, Bill Petrehn, also of Ottumwa Iowa; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at 10:30 AM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta with the Rev. John H. Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery of rural Alta (Hanover) with military rites conducted by the VFW Post #6172 of Alta. Visitation will be for one hour before the service starting at 9:30 AM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
