Jim Yender
December 6, 1942 - January 23, 2017James Herman Yender was born on December 6, 1942, to Gilbert and Margaret (Merten) Yender in the family home north of Early, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, he attended Sacred Heart School, graduating with the class of 1962. Then, he enlisted in the Storm Lake unit of the Army National Guard and served until his discharge in 1968. On November 21, 1964, he married JoAnne Meyer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Michael, Jill, and Jan.
Jim farmed with his brothers, Louis and Joe, before he purchased the farm south of Early where they still lived. In addition, he worked off the farm for the Ful-o-Pep elevator in Early and later for Liechty and Reckoff in Sac City, Iowa. His real passion, however, was for farming, and he was glad when he could return to it full time.
Jim had several interests that he pursued. He loved playing cards, watching westerns, going to casinos, and traveling. Well on their way to having visited every state in the U.S., he and JoAnne, also, toured the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Moreover, they went on several cruises. Jim enjoyed collecting scale models of the equipment he had owned through the years. When the kids were younger, he spent many hours taking them, their friends, his nieces, and his nephews water skiing and fishing on the lake. A lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, he served on the Finance Board and the School Board as well as an usher for weekend Mass and for funerals.
Jim passed away on Monday, January 23, 2017, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa. He is survived by JoAnne, his wife of 52 years; his children: Michael, of Early, Iowa, Jill Roling, of Early, Iowa, and Jan (Chris) Pyle, of Hinton, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jesse (Jordan Smith) and Zach Roling of Early, Iowa, and Austin and Alexis Pyle, of Hinton, Iowa; his great-grandchildren: Cayden Christiansen, of Early, Iowa, and a baby girl expected in May; his sister, Mary Ann Brinkman, of Early, Iowa; his brothers: Louis (Velma), of Minnesota, Robert, of Early, Iowa, and Frank (Sheila) Yender; and his sister-in-law, Betty Meyer, of Odebolt, Iowa; as well as by his nieces, nephews, many extended family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, Joe, and his brothers-in-law, David Brinkman and Verlyn Meyer.
