George "Bud" McNabb III
December 6, 1942 - January 15, 2017

George "Bud" McNabb III, age 74, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at his home in Linn Grove.

George “Bud” was born on December 6, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to George William McNabb, Jr., and Ruth Arlene (Pike) McNabb. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids where he met the love of his life, wife, Marian. They lived in Linn Grove for twenty-nine years.

Retired from the United States Navy, George served a year at the South Pole, a year on Midway Island, for two tours in Vietnam, and he is a Plank Owner at the Naval Air Station in Lemoore, California. Having served all over the world, he specialized in petroleum.

George loved to fish, fossil hunt, spend time in the great outdoors with his family, and enjoy winters in warmer climates. Participating in a Bald Eagle Day, he, even, released a Bald Eagle back into the wild in 2011.

A member of the Loess Hills Gourd Society, the Little Sioux Federated Garden Club, VFW Post 2253 (life member) in Cherokee, he’s participated in the Blue Star Marker program in Buena Vista, Cherokee, and Clay Counties, helping to place a Blue Star Marker in every town in the country to honor our veterans.

George is survived by his wife, Marian; his three daughters: Deanna Avera, and her husband, Clark, of Liberty, Missouri, Barbara Carroll, of Milford, Iowa, and Amanda Jones, of Roseville, California; her step daughter, Candy Grant, and her husband, Jeff, of Adair, Iowa; step son, Gene Geiger, and his wife, Darla, of Spencer, Iowa; three special granddaughters; three great granddaughters; one great grandson, and a nephew, David McElligott, and his family from Johnston, Iowa; as well as cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.

A Funeral Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, followed by a Military Graveside Service at 2:30 p.m. by the Cherokee VFW Post 2253 and the Linn Grove American Legion Post 367 at the Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is overseeing the arrangements.
