Ralph E. Reiling
August 3, 1933 - January 8, 2017Ralph E. Reiling, age 83, of Rembrandt, Iowa, died on Sunday, January 8, 2017, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Ralph Edward, a son of W. J, and Emma (Reif) Reiling, was born on August 3, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. he attended school in Fonda before joining the United States Army on March 4, 1952. He served his country during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on March 3, 1954. Then, he transferred to the Army Reserves for eight more years.
On November 28, 1953, Ralph married Carolyn Youngdahl at Fort Riley, Kansas. Subsequently, they were blessed with six children: Steve, Rod, Carol, Debra, Glenda, and Wendy. An active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids, he, also, belonged to the Sioux Rapids American Legion. Ralph had a real passion for farming. In addition, he worked as a delivery driver for ZFI and MY Supply.
Ralph enjoyed going to the casino, playing cards, watching movies, and traveling by car. Of all his travels in his later years, however, he most, liked participating on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Nonetheless, he loved spending time with his family most of all and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Rod (Kathy) Reiling, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Carol (Darwin) Johnson, of Arthur, Iowa, Debra (Roy) Swenson, of Springfield, Nebraska, Glenda Reiling, of Windsor Heights, Iowa, and Wendy (Tony) Brown, of Pembroke Pines, Florida; his daughter-in-law, Judy Reiling, of Bennington, Nebraska; his grandchildren: Michael Reiling, of Bennington, Nebraska, Jessica Reiling, of Pooler, Georgia, Brad (Michelle) Reiling, of Sioux City, Iowa, Todd (Megan) Reiling, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Tricia Reiling, of Denver, Colorado, Ryan Reiling, of Bozeman, Montana, Jake (Brittany) Reiling, of Justin, Texas, Katie Reiling, of Kearney, Nebraska, Josh Reiling, of Omaha, Nebraska, Bridget Johnson, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Gus Swenson, of Omaha, Nebraska, Leo Swenson, of Springfield, Nebraska, and Cassondra, Noah, and Myles Brown, all of Pembroke Pines, Florida; his great grandchildren: Brekken Reiling and Beau and Blake Johnson; his sister, Mickey (Rick) Dixon, of Gibsonville, North Carolina; and his sisters-in-law, Marlys Youngdahl, of Lakeside, Iowa, and Gwen Reiling, of Fonda, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carolyn Reiling; his son, Steve Reiling; his sisters, Ethel Faylor and Lucille McKiernan; and his brothers, Albert and Harold Reiling.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 13, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will follow in Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids with full military rites by the Sioux Rapids American Legion. Visitation will take place Thursday, January 12, 2017, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 6:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
