May 3, 1924 - March 11, 2016

Herbert Buckendahl, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on March 11, 2016, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Herbert Christian Buckendahl, a son of Henry Herman and Emma Catherine Caroline (Ripke) Buckendahl was born on May 3, 1924, on the family farm in rural Storm Lake, Iowa. He lived there until he moved into town in 1974.

Baptized on May 18, 1924, and confirmed on April 2, 1939, all at the Zion Lutheran Church of rural Storm Lake, Herb married Margret Ziegler at Lawton, Oklahoma, on September 23, 1951. Subsequently, their union was blessed with three children, Ruth, Wanda, and James. Following their wedding, they farmed until Herb began working at the grease gun factory in Albert City. He, then, spent the remainder of his working life hauling feed for Vilas, Iowa Pellets, and Bil-Mar Foods. He retired in 1993. On January 13, 2016, he came to make his home at the North Lake Manor in Storm Lake. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Storm Lake.

His favorite pastimes included driving around in his pick up and socializing with his friends.

Herb’s life will always be cherished and celebrated by his family which includes his wife: Margret, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children, Ruth (Bill) Teppert, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jim (Joyce) Buckendahl, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and his son-in-law, Gary Slavin, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his grandchildren: Diane, Philip, and Hannah Teppert; Dustin Law; and Brandie Jordan; his two step granddaughters, Amy and Mindy Taylor; his great grandchild: Mason Galvan, three step great grandchildren, Jersey and Madison Haake and Hunter Grider; and his sister, Selma Rice, of Minnesota; as well as other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Wanda, and two sisters, Waldina Mahler and Delia Amendt.

The family would like to thank North Lake Manor, Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Pastor Henry Kuhn, Grace Lutheran Church, and the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home for their care and compassion.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 14, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in rural Storm Lake. Visitation will take place Sunday, March 13, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
