Darrell Richard Brugman
February 22, 1927 - March 6, 2016The first of ten children, Darrell Richard Brugman was born to Karl John and Eva Fern Olhausen Brugman on February 22, 1927, at their farm home near Moneta, Iowa. In 1935, the family moved to the Cornell area where he attended first Burr Oak Country School and then Cornell School. Drafted into the Army in 1945 at the age of 18, he served his country in Japan. After his discharge in 1947, he started farming in Clay County.
On June 19, 1949, he married Marilyn Lucille Sones in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Three children were born to their union: Sheila, Richard, and Karla. They farmed in the Webb area until 1992 when Darrell retired and moved to Spencer, but he, always, considered Webb home. An active member of the Webb Methodist Church, he, also, served as Herdland Township Trustee and ASC Committeeman for a number of years. In addition, he was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the American Legion, and the Farm Bureau. For many years, he worked at the Clay County Fair as well. Moreover, he was proud to take part in the Honor Flight. He had a passion for farming, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and most of all, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He looked forward to having his morning coffee at Hy-Vee and talking to his buddies.
Darrell passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Sunday, March 6, 2016, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; his parents, Karl and Eva Brugman; his brothers: Jim, Karl, Jr., Keith, Terry; his sister, Donna; his daughter-in-law, Kathy Brennan Brugman; and a great granddaughter, Jennifer Scanlon.
