July 9, 1926 - January 24, 2016

Gerry R. Whitney, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, January 24, 2016, at the Newell Good Samaritan Society in Newell, Iowa.

Gerry R. Mech, a daughter of William H. and Myra G. (Curran) Mech, was born on July 9, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois.

Baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith, she, also, made her first Communion in accordance with that faith. She attended Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst, Illinois, graduating with the class of 1944.

On April 20, 1946, Gerry married Clair R. Whitney in Chicago. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Jo Ann, Susan, Claire, William, and Kay.

Gerry was a member of the Elks Lodge and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed participating in card clubs and watching birds. In addition, she loved going to movies every Sunday. An avid reader, she, also, liked completing crossword puzzles. In addition, she was an active volunteer for the Council Against Domestic Abuse. Without question, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Jo Ann (Bruce) Branco, of Des Moines, Iowa, Susan (James) Younggreen, of Savannah, Georgia, Claire Petersen, of Newell, Iowa, and William (Wendie) Whitney, of Aurelia, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren; as well as extended family members and friends.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clair; her daughter, Kay; her son-in-law, Kevin Petersen; an infant grandson, Jeremy Whitney; and her siblings: Helen Besson, Margaret Christensen, and James and William Mech.

Memorial services will be held Friday, January 29, 2016, at 1:30 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to services at the funeral home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
