Adeline L. Petersen, age 102, of Alta, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center of Storm Lake.

A native of Alta, Addie Petersen was born here on October 13, 1913. She attended Alta Public Schools, graduating in 1931. She, then, enrolled at Buena Vista College where she earned a teaching certificate in music. She began her teaching career at Newell Public Schools.

On June 2, 1937, she married Harvey O. Petersen. Harvey and Addie served as the superintendent of schools and K-12 music teacher for several northwest Iowa communities. She taught both vocal and instrumental music in Paton, Sergeant Bluff, and Cleghorn, Iowa, and vocal music for twelve years in Boone and Ames, Iowa. A much beloved teacher, she enjoyed many visits from treasured former students after she retired. Together, she and Harvey spent seventy-three years in the teaching field. During the summer months, they operated a root beer stand and restaurant at Arnold’s Park Amusement Park on Lake Okoboji. After retiring from teaching, she and Harvey returned to her family farm in Alta where they remained. Harvey passed away May 24, 1989.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Alta; PEO Chapter GB; a sixty-seven year member of the Daughter of the Nile, Hathar Temple, Sioux City; and a life member of the Iowa Education Association and the National Education Association, Addie played an instrumental role in advocating for Alta’s new middle school. A founding member of the Alta Community Education Foundation, she was honored as Alta Citizen of the Year, 2012; Friend of the School for Alta – Aurelia, 2012; and Grand Marshal for Alta’s Homecoming 2012. An avid and excellent bridge player as well, she continued to play until her death. She enjoyed meeting and being around people and had an outstanding memory for friends, acquaintances, and people in the community.

Addie is survived by her only child, Bruce, and his wife, Sharon; her grandchildren, Dani (Julius) Baker; Alexa (Nick) Potocki; and Ellie and D. J. Petersen; and her great grandchildren, Aliyah and Delaney Baker and Jameson Potocki. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Emma (Rydstrom) Hansen; her husband, Harvey; and her sister, Berniece (Elzie) Crawford.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 30, 2015, at 10:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Alta with the Rev. Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake. Visitation will be Sunday, November 29, 2015, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
