June 12, 1936 - December 6, 2015Bettie North, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, December 6, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Bettie Lorraine Shannon, a daughter of Fay and Flossie (Smith) Shannon, was born on June 12, 1936, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Baptized at the Presbyterian Church, she attended Hayes Township School where she graduated in 1954.
On November 28, 1954, Bettie married Harold North at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with four children: Michael, Cheryl, Tamela, and Steven.
For ten years after graduating from high school, Bettie worked at the Cobblestone restaurant. Then, she did seasonal work at the Canning Factory for several years while her children were growing up. In 1978, she began working for Varenhorst Fabrics where she remained until she retired in 2003.
Bettie had a passion for golf. She, especially, enjoyed playing in ladies leagues. In addition, she liked a game of Two Ball with her husband, Harold. An avid bowler as well, she began participating in this sport as a young girl and continued until she retired. Indeed, she bowled in a league and played in the Ladies State Bowling tournaments before she started going south for the winter. In her spare time, she knitted afghans for all of her family members. She very much valued her family and especially enjoyed following her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s activities. She took great pride in her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of sixty-one years, Harold, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children: Michael (Teresa) North, of San Angelo, Texas, Cheryl (Dennis) Christiansen, of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Tami (Kris) Parker, of Persia, Iowa; her grandchildren: Dustin and Heather Christiansen; Brady and Justin North; Holly and Kristin Parker; Ashley (Matt) Ramler; and Brooke (Brad) Reese; her great grandchildren: Cal Kocinski; Kaylyn North; Jadon, Kaitlyn, and Taylor Parker; Ava, Kyla, Nora, and Nolan Ramler; and Brynn Reese; and her brother, Marion Cox, of Eldo, New Mexico; as well as nieces; nephews; extended family members; and many friends.
Bettie is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Steven; her sister, Frances Wagner; and an infant sister, Bobbi.
Memorial services will be held Friday, December 11, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place Thursday, December 10, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present the entire time at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
