Donald E. Behm, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

One of twelve children, Don, a son of John and Elizabeth (McEvoy) Behm, was born on May 18, 1927, in Mondamin, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa, he attended school at and graduated from Missouri Valley High School. On July 23, 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army. After proudly serving his country as a radio operator, he was honorably discharged on November 16, 1946. For his service, he was awarded a Victory Medal.

On September 5, 1949, Don married Jean McCrickard at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Missouri Valley. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Pamela, Rod, Jeff, Tracy, and Mike.

For many years, Don worked as the grocery manager at Safeway in Storm Lake. After the store closed, he found employment at Hy-Vee.

Don was currently a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. A member of the Knights of Columbus, he had, also, served as a former Grand Knight. In addition, Don belonged to the Kiwanis Club.

For over twenty-five years, Don enjoyed writing his column in the Storm Lake Times called, “Cracker Barrel”. An avid football fan, he, especially, enjoyed watching his favorite teams, Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He, also, enjoyed riding his bike and attending garage sales. Most of all, however, Don valued his family. He, especially, loved attending his grandchildren’s ball games as well as their other activities. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend to many.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Jean Behm, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Pamela (Ted Hesselguesser) Sutton, of Omaha, Nebraska, Rod (Judy) Behm, of Carroll, Iowa, Jeff (Julia) Behm, of Alta, Iowa, Tracy (Ed) Bredvick, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Mike (Norma) Behm, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jennifer, Mark, Matt, Mike (Ashley), Nick, Reverend Patrick, and Tom Behm; Robyn and Nicole Bredvick; Mollie (Rick) Cornell, and Heather (Jeramie) Hinote; and nine great grandchildren; as well as extended family members and friends.
