Alta, Iowa

Helen M. Johnson, age 99, of Alta, passed away on Wednesday, September 02, 2015, at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehabilitation Center of Aurelia.

Helen was born in Scott Township on October 26, 1915, to Marenus and Annie (Hanson) Peterson. She attended the Fairview School and graduated in 1933. On November 1, 1933, she married Allie Johnson. To this union, two children were born, Barbara and Burton “Butch.”

Baptized into the Baptist Church, she, very actively, participated in the life of the church she loved as a Sunday school superintendent and teacher. In addition, she served as president, secretary, and treasurer of the Ladies Aid Society, and she sang in the choir. After the Baptist church closed, however, she joined the United Methodist church. There, she served as the secretary of the U.M.W. for fifteen years.

Helen kept a diary and a black book for over sixty-five years and was called often for important information and dates. She loved to travel and live in her trailer. After her husband retired, they spent three months in Texas and three months in Minnesota fishing. She worked part-time in the office in both places. Moreover, she loved to crochet and knit, and she made several items for her family. She participated in the Senior Citizen Dinner Date. In May, 2008, Helen moved to Wel-Life, and then to Sunset Knoll on March 20, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Allie Johnson, in September, 1999; her daughter, Barbara Nehring, in 2010; two sons-in-law, Philip Hamand and Alvin Nehring; two brothers, Wesley Peterson and Rev. Virgil Peterson; a sister-in-law, Pauline Peterson; a great-granddaughter, Christina Hamand; her brothers-in-law, Charlie Harding and Hubert Fredrickson.

Helen is survived by her son, Burton “Butch” (Kaye) Johnson, of Monmouth, Illinois; six grandchildren, Dale, Allen (Kim), and Cindy Hamand; and Shane (Renee), Todd, and Graham (Amy) Johnson; six great-grandchildren, Philip (Megan), Nicholas (Chelsea), Emily, and Christopher Hamand; and Michael and Ashley Johnson; four great-great-grandchildren, Lexie, Aurora, Luci, and Parker; her brother-in-law, Thomas Aldrich, of California; and her sister-in-law, Velma Peterson, of Storm Lake, Iowa.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 09, 2015, at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church of Alta with the Rev. Remigio P. Panlaqui officiating. Burial will be at the Elk Township Cemetery of Alta. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alta United Methodist Church or to St. Croix Hospice.
