November 23, 1935 - June 10, 2015

Martha (Lane) Harald, age 79, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

Martha Jean Rogers, a daughter of Carlyle and Gladys (Miller) Rogers, was born at Dubuque, Iowa, on November 23, 1935. For the first nineteen years of her life, she lived in Dubuque County and the city of Dubuque. She was a 1954 graduate of the Dubuque Senior High School.

On November 25, 1954, Martha married Burdette Lane. They made their first home at Marathon, Iowa. On March 1, 1955, they moved to a farm northeast of Webb where they resided for twenty-three years. During that time, they were blessed with four children: Cynthia Jean, Gary William, Kathryn Kay, and Patricia Joy. Martha and Burdette returned to Marathon in 1978.

Employed at numerous businesses throughout her life, Martha worked as a CNA at nursing homes and in private homes, as an employee of the grease gun factory, and at the A & M Laundry in Spencer. Burdette passed away on June 21, 1986. On October 1, 1988, Martha married Wendell Harald and they moved to Albert City. After Wendell died on July 13, 1998, Martha spent the remaining years of her life in Albert City.

Martha had been a member of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Albert City from 1988 to 2005. While attending that church, she served on the church council, various committees within the church, and as WELCA president. In addition, she sang in the church choir and taught the eighth grade Sunday School class. Later, she joined the Evangelical Covenant Church of Albert City and served on committees, sang and played the piano for the church, taught the adult Sunday School Class, and served as a substitute Sunday School teacher. She, also, belonged to “Just A Club,” the Golden Rule Club since 1988, the Albert City “Red Hatters,” and “The Best Camping Club (anyone would have). Martha shared her musical gifts with many churches, nursing homes, and people throughout her life including at many funerals and weddings. In addition, she read avidly.

Martha’s life will always be cherished by her children: Cynthia Johannsen, of Eagan, Minnesota, Gary and Dori Lane, of Spencer, Iowa, Kathryn Chadwick, of Rolfe, Iowa, and Patricia and David Koons, of Estherville, Iowa; her grandchildren: Sheila and Paul Devine; Jonathan and Katie Johannsen; Riley and Stephanie Koons; and Leah, Seth, and Levi Lane; her great grandchildren: Ava, Isaiah, and Jocelyn Devine; her sister, Lois Dale, of Dubuque, Iowa; six sisters-in-law; and eight nieces and nephews; as well as by other extended family members and many friends.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of thirty-one years, Burdette; her husband, Wendell; her son-in-law, Mark Chadwick; her brother, Reverend Charles E. Rogers; and her nephew, David Story.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 15, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. Burial will take place in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will be Sunday, June 14, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
