September 28, 1931 - April 18, 2015

James L. Chase, age 83, of Alta, Iowa, died on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at the Fonda Nursing and Rehab Center in Fonda, Iowa.

James Leroy Chase, a son of Luvern and Anna (Zembsch) Chase, was born on September 28, 1931, in Cherokee, Iowa. As a member of the United States Army, he proudly served his country during the Korean War. In recognition of his service, he received the Korean Service Medal with three service stars, the Purple Heart, the Nation Defense Medal, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the United Nations Korean Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 3, 1953.

On August 22, 1952 James married Janis Salvin in Jackson, Minnesota. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Lee, Lynn, and Layne. For a time, Jim worked at Hygrade, but he, also, owned his own business, Duffy’s, in Alta.

In his spare time, James enjoyed roller skating, bowling, and driving stock cars. More recently, most knew him as Jim Chase, “madman of the track.” Most of all, however, James enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Lee Chase, of Omaha, Nebraska, Lynn (Keith) Hughes, of Arnolds Park, Iowa, and Layne (Lauri) Chase, of Oto, Iowa; his grandchildren: James Chase, of Alta, Iowa, Jason Chase and Kevin Blythe, both of Des Moines, Iowa, Nikki (Matt) Johnson, of Correctionville, Iowa, Jessica (Jeffry) Allen, of Anthon, Iowa, Joshua Chase, of Oto, Iowa, Amie Hughes, of Alta, Iowa, and Tony Hughes, of Matlock, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Jamon, Joey, Josiah, and Journey Allen; Haven, Brian, Jonah, and Kyndra Chase; Joseph and Melanie Hughes; and Kera Johnson; his great-great grandchildren: Emma, Isabella, and Lucy Chase and Gabriel and Liam Hughes; his brothers: Thomas (Margaret), of Carroll, Iowa, Douglas (Veronica), of Fonda, Iowa, and Father Raymond Chase, of Cockeysville, Maryland; as well as extended family members and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janis; his sisters, Juanita Chase and Dorothy Olson; and his brother, Clair Chase.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta with full military rites by the Storm Lake AMVETS Post #66. Visitation will take place Tuesday, April 21, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
