Marcella Eileen Piercy
July 20, 1929 - February 18, 2015Marcella E. Piercy, age 85, of Newell, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Marcella Eileen Dirks, a daughter of Dick and Gretchen (Ahrens) Dirks, was born on July 20, 1929, in Fonda, Iowa.
Baptized in 1929 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pomeroy, Iowa, she was later confirmed in the Presbyterian Church in Fonda, Iowa.
Marcella attended school in Fonda and Varina, Iowa. She furthered her education at the Chicago School of Nursing where she graduated with a nursing degree.
On October 1, 1950, Marcella married Donald W. Piercy, Sr., at the First Presbyterian Church in Fonda. They were, subsequently, blessed with three children, Catherine, Mary, and Donald, Jr.
Marcella and Donald farmed north of Fonda and later west of Newell. They, then, moved to Newell, where they owned and operated the Piercy Variety Store for fourteen years.
Marcella was currently a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell.
In her spare time, Marcella enjoyed experiencing the outdoors, gardening, cleaning house, and quilting. Most of all, however, she loved spending time with her family and hosting family get-togethers. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Cathy (Dale) Sanders, of Ankeny, Iowa; Mary (Larry) Nissen, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Donald (Jean) Piercy, Jr., of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren: Ben (Alison) Sanders, of Urbandale, Iowa, Gary Sanders, of Ankeny, Iowa, Olivia (Brian) Forney, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Jace Piercy, of Ames, Iowa, and Alanna Piercy, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her great-grandchildren: Kayla Schuster, of Urbandale, Iowa, Peyton Sanders, of Urbandale, Iowa, and Carter Sanders, of Urbandale, Iowa; her sister, Marjorie Nelson, of Somis, California; her brothers: Leroy (Donna) Dirks, of Fonda, Iowa, Johnny Dirks, of Derby, Kansas, and Roland (Mary) Dirks, of Wichita, Kansas; and her sister-in-law, Grace (Bill) Wessendorf, of Newell, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Gretchen Dirks; her husband, Donald W. Piercy; her brothers: Harold, Fred, Edward and Richard; and her sisters: Leona, Violet, Eva, Verneeda, and Eileen.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place Friday, February 20, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
