Edith May Mudge
May 16, 1918 - February 18, 2015With her daughters at her side, Edith M. Mudge, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, in Storm Lake.
Edith May Spencer, the only child of Van W. and Martha E. (Meyer) Spencer, was born on May 16, 1918, in Truesdale, Iowa. She attended Scott Center Country School for eight years and Truesdale High School for one year before the family moved to a farm near Nemaha. She, then, transferred to Hayes High School, graduating with the Class of 1936. Here at school, she met the love of her life, Maurice E. Mudge.
The two married on August 17, 1941, and celebrated fifty-two years of marriage in 1992, the year of Maurice’s death. Together, they raised two daughters, DiAnne and Donna Jean.
The epitome of a farmer’s wife, Edith helped with all aspects of farm life in addition to driving school bus for Hayes School. Throughout the years, however, she saw her main job as raising “the girls,” and she always volunteered first to serve as their driver, chaperone, Girl Scout Leader, bean walker, and toboganner. In the early 1970’s, she started working wrapping gifts during the Christmas holiday season at Douglass Clothing. During her time there, she thoroughly enjoyed the many customers, employees, and, of course, the shopping.
Edith treasured her family, and she loved attending her grandchildren’s school programs, concerts, and sporting events. She was Emma, Casey, and Keegan’s #1 fan.
In later years, Edith often sped around town in her little red station wagon on her way to coffee with friends, to the bakery for goodies, to the grocery store, to the pharmacy, to her hair appointments, to the girls’ homes, or to deliver trays of her Christmas cookies,.
Those left to cherish Edith’s memory include her children: DiAnne Fikkert, and Donna (Pat) Morgan, all of Storm Lake; her grandchildren: Emma (Drew) Kollasch; Casey (Shelby O’Bannon), and Keegan Morgan; her step grandchildren: Erin Morgan (Frank) Stabile, and Jeff Morgan (Megan Hottovy); and her step-great-grandchildren: Isabella and Ethan Stabile and Caleb Hottovy; as well as a collection of close friends and extended family members.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law; and her husband, Maurice.
