April 1, 1998 - September 29, 2014

Lexi Jo Rydstrom, age 16, of Marathon, Iowa, died on September 29, 2014, in Storm Lake.

Lexi Jo Rydstrom was born on April 1, 1998, in Spencer, Iowa, a daughter of Tony and Tina (Shouse) Rydstrom. Growing up, she lived with her family in Marathon and attended grade school at Laurens-Marathon Community School. She was currently a junior at Sioux Central High School.

Lexi was an active volunteer in Marathon where she took part in many events. She enjoyed participating in small group speech, FFA, and FCCLA. In her spare time, she enjoyed singing and taking part in choir. This past summer, she attended HOBY, a youth leadership seminar.

A social butterfly, Lexi loved hanging out with family and friends. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed watching scary movies.

Lexi will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend. Her carefree soul will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her parents, Tony and Tina Rydstrom, of Marathon, Iowa; her sister, Brittany Rydstrom, of Ankeny, Iowa; her grandparents, Joe and Linda Rydstrom, of Marathon, and Jim and Vonnie Shouse, of Laurens; her great grandmother, LaVaune Rees, of Greenville, Iowa; her aunts and uncles: Todd Rydstrom and Michael Dickman; Nichole and Wendal Metzger, and their daughter, MaKayla; and Jamie and Andy Fehr, and their children, Alex and Luke; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.

Lexi is preceded in death by her great grandparents: Lester and Bessie Rydstrom, Kathryne and Gehardt Olson, LeRoy Rees, Nellie and Art Shouse, and Walter Berg; and her aunt, Stacy Shouse.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 2, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Marathon Community Center in Marathon. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Tragic Head-on Collision Claims Two Teenage Lives

An accident between a passenger car and a pickup truck occurred at about 10:45 in the morning at the crest of a hill on a gravel road, 570th Street, a half mile east of county road M50. Both victims were traveling in the passenger car and were pronounced dead at the scene. Killed were the driver, Caleb Smith, 17, of Sioux Rapids, and a passenger, Lexi Rydstrom, 16, of Marathon. Two other passengers in the car were transported to area hospitals. The driver of the pickup truck sustained only minor injuries, but his passenger suffered more serious ones. No charges are expected in the incident (Storm Lake Pilot Tribune, 29 Sep 2014).
