Helen Frances Kuyper
March 22, 1920 - September 24, 2014Helen F. Kuyper, age 94, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Helen Frances Johnson was born on March 22, 1920, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, a daughter of Arthur and Mae (Phelps) Johnson.
On September 20, 1945, Helen married Arnold R. “Shorty” Kuyper at the Bethany Lutheran Church parsonage in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with four daughters: Barbara, Betsy, Kim, and Vicki.
Helen spent her early years teaching in country schools. She, then, stayed home to raise her daughters. After the family moved to Storm Lake in 1959, however, she substitute taught in the Storm Lake public schools. She also looked after children at Storm Lake’s Gingerbread House for many years where she was affectionately known as “Grandma Helen.”
Most of all, Helen dearly loved her family. Remembered as a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters: Barbara (Kem) Petersen, Betsy (Bob) Thompson, Kim Janssen, and Vicki (Gary) Bonnett; her grandchildren: Kodi (Matt) Brotherson; Travis (Jordan) Petersen, and their daughter, Piper; Sarah (Ryan) Mellen, and their children: Caleb and Jayna; Michael (Laura) Janssen; David Janssen; Rebecca (Matt) Carlson; Bobby and Elizabeth Bonnett; and her sisters, Betty (LeRoy) Kunz and Eileen Buzzell; as well as extended family members and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold “Shorty” Kuyper; two brothers; and a son-in-law, Tom Janssen.
Private graveside services will be held at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
