Don E. Williams, age 94, of Newell, Iowa, died on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at the Newell Good Samaritan Society in Newell.

Don was born on July 22, 1919, in Carroll, Iowa, a son of Ed and Bess (Horigan) Williams. Growing up, he attended school in Lake City, graduating in 1937.

On March 13, 1941, Don enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 19, 1945.

On March 24, 1946, Don married Mabel Leathers at the Methodist Church in Glidden, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Gary, Jerry, and Diane.

A long time member of the United Methodist Church in Newell before its closing, Don, subsequently, transferred his membership to the First United Congregational Church of Christ in Newell.

Very active in his community, Don served for many years as a member of the Newell American Legion and the Newell Fire Department as well as on the Newell Park Board. For over fifty years, he owned and operated Don’s Radio and T.V. in Newell.

In his spare time, Don loved to play golf. Not much would keep him from getting out on the course, not even his age. He continued playing until two years ago.

Don will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and admired him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Jerry Williams, of Ottumwa, Iowa, Gary Williams, of Mason City, Iowa, and Diane Evans, of Newell, Iowa; his grandchildren: Corey, Adam, Allison, Melissa, Nicole, Trisha, Michael, and Channa; his great-grandchildren: Atley Jo, Blake, Cole, Haley, Sequoia, Caidin, Caydence, and Riley; his brother, Bill (Pat) Williams, of Lake City, Iowa; his sister, Margaret (Leonard) Watkins, of Prescott Valley, Arizona; and his sister-in-law, Annette Leathers, of Torrington, Connecticut; as well as extended family members and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mabel.

Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m., February 15, 2014, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Iowa.
Interment: At a later date. 00, 000 at the Newell Cemetery in Newell, Iowa.
