Eileen McDeid, age 72, of Clinton, Iowa, and formerly of Sioux Rapids, died on Monday, November 18, 2013, at Saint Therese of St. Odilia Hospice in Shoreview, Minnesota.

Janice Eileen Sundblad, daughter of Oscar L. and Nellie C. (Halverson) Sundblad, was born in Spencer, Iowa, on June 6, 1941. She spent her youth in Sioux Rapids where she received her education and graduated from high school. Subsequently, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and then completed a master’s degree at the University of Iowa.

In 1962, Eileen married Gerald “Jerry” McDeid. Their union was blessed with two sons: Bryce and Rowan. The couple later divorced. Eileen began her teaching career in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Then, she returned to Sioux Rapids for a year before moving to Camanche, Iowa, in 1972 to resume her career in special education. In 1978, she relocated to Clinton, Iowa, where spent the remainder of her life. She had a true passion for teaching and touched the lives of many special needs students. She retired from teaching in 2003.

A very physically active person, Eileen will be remembered as an avid cyclist and walker. Indeed, she brought her two passions (teaching and biking) together by organizing successful fundraisers to support the Clinton Community Schools. During her retirement, she made many trips back to northwest Iowa to care for her elderly parents. She was a good friend to everyone she met.

Eileen’s life and memory will always be loved and cherished by her family which includes her children: Bryce McDeid, and his girlfriend, Gina Melvin, of Clinton, Iowa; Rowan McDeid, and his wife, Danette, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Kelsi McDeid, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Logan McDeid, of Clinton, Iowa, Quinn McDeid, of Tennessee, and Ian and Sawyer Rose McDeid, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; one great-grandchild, Ryan Anderson, Jr., of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a sister, Corlyss Richards, of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, John Sundblad, and his wife, Ellen, of Polk City, Iowa; a nephew, Jay Richards, and his partner, Barb Delorme, of Columbus, Ohio; and a niece, Kimberly Sundblad, of Indianapolis, Indiana; as well as other extended family members and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother-in-law, Harvey Richards; and her nephew, Blake Richards.

Funeral Services for J. Eileen McDeid will be held on Friday, November 22, 2013, at 10:30 AM at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Interment will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 21, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids with the family present the entire time. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Eileen's name to either: the American Cancer Society, the Make A Wish Foundation, or the Epilepsy Foundation.
