Betty A. Stone, age 81, of Marathon, Iowa, died on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Betty Ann Wittrock, the daughter of Edward and Annetta L. (Troxel) Wittrock, was born near Sutherland, Iowa, on October 4, 1932, where she attended her first few years of school. In 1941, the family moved to a farm south of Hartley, Iowa, and she completed the eighth grade at Omega #8 country school. She, then, continued her education in Hartley, graduating from Hartley High School in 1950. Next, she worked as a bookkeeper at a bank in Spencer, Iowa.

On January 23, 1955, Betty married Gordon Stone at the United Methodist Church in Hartley. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Bruce, Sandra, and Debera. She and Gordon spent their married life on their farm west of Marathon. A devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, she worked alongside Gordon in their farming operation.

A member of the Marathon United Methodist Church, Betty taught Sunday School for many years and served as the Sunday School Superintendent as well. She was also very active in the U.M.W. and church circles. She also served in several offices on the church board and in the women’s ministries.

Betty’s life will always be cherished by her family which includes her devoted husband of over fifty-eight years, Gordon, of Marathon, Iowa; her children: Bruce L. (Laurie) Stone, of Marathon, Iowa, Sandra R. Stone, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Debera K. (Dave) Howdle, of Altoona, Iowa; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; her brother, Richard Wittrock, of Milford, Iowa; and her sister, Dorothy Thomas, of Bellevue, Nebraska; as well as many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, James and Keith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
