Surrounded by family, Donald E. Meyer, age 85, of Otsego Place, Storm Lake, Iowa, died on October 11, 2013, in Storm Lake.

Donald Eugene Meyer was born on August 21, 1928, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Edward and Blanche (Martine) Meyer. He was baptized, received his first communion, and was confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake where he remained a lifelong member. Growing up, he attended school in Truesdale and graduated from Truesdale High School.

Before entering the service, Don worked with Quaker Oats Company in Truesdale. On June 26, 1950, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country with the 17th Infantry Regiment during the Korean Conflict. For his service to his country, he received the Combat Infantry Badge and the Korean Service Medal with two campaign stars. He was honorably discharged in October of 1953.

On April 2, 1956, Don married Janette Marie Madsen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mallard, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Bryan, Dennis “Zeke”, Pam, and Jim.

A volunteer fireman from April 13, 1959, to February 10, 1981, Don retired as a Captain. Very active in the AMVETS Post #66, he participated with the Color Guard. In Storm Lake, he worked for DeKalb and for the community school district as a bus driver until he retired in 1983. Following his retirement, he delivered motorcycles, ATV’s, and snowmobiles for Storm Lake Honda. He also worked for Floyd Binder and Charles Specketer farming.

In his spare time, Don enjoyed stock car races, wood working, and gardening. He also greatly valued the members of his family, and he treasured the time he was able to spend with them as well as with his friends. He especially enjoyed his great grandchildren, Trevor and Brooke. They held a special place in Great Papa’s heart. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Janette Meyer, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Bryan (Joanne) Meyer, of Whittemore, Iowa, Dennis “Zeke” (Stacy) Meyer, of Rembrandt, Iowa, Pam (Marty) Winebrinner, of Jefferson, South Dakota, and Jim (Tracy) Meyer, of Sioux City, Iowa; his grandchildren: Megan (Alex) Lenz; Angela, Bobbi (special friend, Sean Sullivan), Brittany, Chris (Jessica), Holly, Nicholas, and Tanya Meyer; Nicole Olney; and Brandie (Dustin) Wenham; his great grandchildren, Trevor and Brooke Meyer; his brother, Richard Meyer, of Des Moines, Iowa; his brother-in-law, Arnold Jensen, of Ringsted, Iowa; and his sister-in-law, Carol Sheehan, of Des Moines, Iowa; as well as nieces; nephews; extended family members; and many close friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Blanche Meyer; his parents-in-law, Clarence and Emma Madsen; his siblings: Harold, Francis, and Jerry Meyer; Dorothy Kaufman; and Mildred Bockleman; and his sisters-in-law: Lois Jensen, Janice Sutton, and Shirley Thompson.

Visitation: 5:00-8:00 p.m., October 13, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., October 14, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: October 14, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Memorials may be designated to UnityPoint Hospice, the Storm Lake Fire Department, or St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
