Jean Strom
February 13, 1919 - May 10, 2013

Alta

Jean was born on February 13, 1919, the daughter of James G. and Amanda (Lemons) Duckworth, on a farm one and a half miles south of Hanover. When she was three years old, however, she moved with her family to a farm close to Highview School. She attended school at Highview until she was in third grade. The family, then, moved to a place near Alta. After graduating from Alta Consolidated School in 1936, Jean attended Ft. Dodge Beauty Academy.

On September 2, 1939, Jean married Elmer Strom at the Presbyterian parsonage in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. They were blessed with three sons, Gordon, David, and Steven. In February of 1934, Jean joined the First Presbyterian Church. She held many offices in the church including Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. She served as a Sunday school teacher and chairman of the Circle and the Presbyterian Women. She helped with Meals On Wheels and the Lord’s Cupboard. She spent several years with the St. John’s quilting ladies where she enjoyed the fellowship and companionship of those friends.

Jean owned and operated her own beauty shop for forty-five years. She enjoyed the patrons of her shop and made many friends there over the years. She loved to cook and spent many hours entertaining friends and family. She enjoyed traveling. She went on bus tours and also spent time in Alaska with her son, David, and his friends.

Elmer, Jean’s husband of thirty-five years, passed away on January 22, 1975, and her eldest son, Gordon, passed away on June 4, 1991. She is also preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Kathy and Nancy.

Jean leaves behind her sons, David, and his wife, Marisa, of Miami, Florida, and Steve, and his wife, Betty, of Alta; her grandsons, Ben, and his wife, Carrie, of Corona Del Mar, California, and Greg, and his wife, Gayle, of Storm Lake; her granddaughters, Staci, of Chicago, and Joni, and her husband, Dave, of Nashville; and her great grandchildren, Bridget, Henry Griffin, Gabrie, Ava, and Sophie; as well as many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Alta with the Rev. Craig Lee officiating. Burial will be at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake.
