March 18, 1930 - May 6, 2013

Storm Lake

The third of six children, Ammon A "Al" Swartzentruber was born on March 18, 1930, to Andrew (Andy) and Amanda C. Wengerd Swartzentruber, members of the Old Order Amish Community, near Fredericksburg, Ohio.

On June 1, 1958, he married Erdine Fay Hochstetler of Millersburg, Ohio. In 1968, they adopted a daughter, Brooke Renee Stratten.

Al loved God, his family, and friends. He worshiped at The First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. He enjoyed reading, playing Nintendo with his son-in-law, going on drives and Saturday morning breakfast outings with friends, and pausing often to appreciate God’s creation in nature.

After completing his high school diploma, he earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education Administration from the University of Cincinnati. Later, he earned both BS and MS Degrees in Microbiology from Ohio State University. While doing graduate work, he taught middle school science for the Cincinnati, Ohio, School System while actively participating in the teachers’ organizations. After ten years of teaching, he began a career as a Research Microbiologist for the Food and Drug Administration in Washington D.C. in 1970. In 1981, he transferred to the cancer research center, the National Center for Toxicological Research, in Arkansas where he retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law, Perry and Lydia (Oswald) Hochstetler; his son-in-law, William A. Rouse; his brother and sister-in-law, Eli and Katie Swartzentruber; his sister, Nettie, and former brother-in-law, George Christner; his sister-in-law, Lenora Mae Pipher Swartzentruber; his former sister-in-law, Jewel Earls Swartzentruber; an infant sister, Anna; a niece, Peggy Swartzentruber; and a nephew, Laban Barkman.

Those left to cherish his memory include Erdine, his wife of nearly fifty-five years; his daughter, Brooke Rouse, of Alta; his sister, Mary, and brother-in-law, Atlee Barkman; and his brother, Joe Swartzentruber; as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013, at 2:00 PM at the Scandinavian Cemetery of Alta with the Rev. Ryan L. Brandenberger officiating. Burial will be at the Scandinavian Cemetery of Alta.
