Katherine "Katy" Berry, age 86, of Lakeside, Iowa, died on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Katherine Nelson was born on October 7, 1926, in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of Archie and Mary (Dick) Nelson. Baptized and confirmed at the Church of Christ in Cherokee, she became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake in 1988. After graduating from Washington High School in Cherokee with the Class of 1944, she worked at the Rationing Board in Cherokee and later at the R.E.C. until the Storm Lake office closed.
On August 24, 1948, Katy married James W. “Bill” Berry at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. They were blessed with three children: Barbara, Joan, and Steve.
Katy was a member of the Eastern Star. For many years, she enjoyed bowling and loved playing pitch and 500 with her friends. She also loved sharing both coffee and fellowship with family and friends.
A loving wife and devoted mother, Katy treasured her family. In her later years, her grandchildren brought her special joy, and she attended all of their activities. She will be remembered and missed for the friendship she offered and her ever-present care and concern for all those she loved.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Barbara Kestel, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Joan Hamilton, of Alta, Iowa, and Steve (Janet) Berry, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren: Leah (Chris) Clausen, of Waukee, Iowa, Nick (Taryn) Kestel, of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Zach Hamilton, of Chicago, Illinois, Mike (Lesley) Kestel, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Blake and Brock Berry, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Hayden and Fletcher Clausen; Aiden Kestel and Kestel; and Tiffanie and Tate Richardson; her sisters-in-law: Lois Nelson, of Cherokee, Iowa, Maria Berry, of Milford, Iowa, Marilyn Demers, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Avis Berry, of Cambridge, Minnesota; as well as extended family members and friends.
Katy was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Berry; her parents, Archie and Mary Nelson; her sister, Marian Nelson; her brothers, Ted and Paul Nelson; her stepmother, Almeda Nelson; and her stepbrothers, Paul and George Hoxie.
Visitation: 5:00-7:30 p.m., May 22, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., May 23, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Vigil Service: 7:15 p.m., May 22, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
