Joel Anderson, age 94, of Newell, Iowa, died on February 25, 2013, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

A. Joel Anderson was born on January 13, 1919, in Newell, Iowa, the son of Alex J. and Eulalia (Blair) Anderson. Growing up, he attended school at and graduated from Providence Consolidated School.

On June 6, 1945, Joel married Mabel Hartman in Buffalo Center, Iowa. They were blessed with two daughters, Jolene and Joelle. As a family, they lived on their farm near Newell for many years where he raised Angus cattle and fed out the calves.

A member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Joel served as an usher, a deacon, a trustee, and on the Educational Board.

Throughout his life, Joel exemplified the spirit of volunteering. An active member of the Buena Vista County Farm Bureau, he spent numerous hours serving his community as a membership worker over a number of years. For his efforts, he received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award. He also provided joy to multitudes of children in his Santa suit. Besides volunteering as the “Man in Red” at the Newell-Fonda Community School, he also dedicated many Santa hours and years to the Story Hour at the Newell Public Library, to the Newell Good Samaritan Center, to the City of Newell, to Santa’s Castle in Storm Lake, and to Christmas activities in people’s homes. In 1997, he received an award from the Department of Education for outstanding service to the State of Iowa. A member of the Lion’s Club, he also provided his time freely to the Republican Party and conducted the Fire Board meetings in Newell.

Spending time with his family was very important to Joel. He treasured family gatherings.

Those left to cherish his memory include his two daughters: Jolene Davis, and her husband, Ken, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Joelle Kier, and her husband, Tim, of Newell, Iowa; his grandchildren: Eric Davis, and his wife, Martha, of Tucson, Arizona, Kendra Davis, and her fiancé, Derek Tremain, of Melbourne, Florida, Jordan Davis, and his wife, Sara, of Waterloo, Iowa, Alex Kier, of Waterloo, Iowa, and Kalee Gerdes, and her husband, Aaron, of Des Moines, Iowa; three great grandchildren: Grace Davis, Myla Kier, and Koa Tremain; one brother, Ken Anderson and his wife, Jane, of Newell, Iowa; and two sisters: Margaret Bearse, of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and Eleanor Jean Wendlandt, and her husband, Bill, of Spencer, Iowa; as well as extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, in 2002; his parents, Alex and Eulalia Anderson; and two brothers-in-law, Oliver Bearse and Gerna Lee Lookingbill.

Visitation: 2:00-5:00 p.m., March 03, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 1:30 p.m., March 04, 2013, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Iowa.
Interment: March 04, 2013, at the Newell Cemetery in Newell, Iowa
