Elden B. Woodford, age 90, of Marathon, Iowa, died on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Elden Burnette Woodford, the son of John and Jessie (Roder) Woodford, was born in Marathon on July 10, 1922, where he lived his youth and received his education, graduating in 1940 from Marathon High School.

During World War II, Elden faithfully served his country as a staff sergeant in the United States Army between November 23, 1942, and January 15, 1946.

On September 17, 1943, Elden married Helen J. Simeon in Lawton, Oklahoma, while stationed at Fort Sill. Following his honorable discharge, Elden and Helen farmed from 1946 until they retired and moved into Marathon in 1982. They felt fortunate to have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September of 2003.

A member of the Marathon United Methodist Church, the Marathon American Legion, and the Laurens VFW, Elden served in various district and state offices within the American Legion. He greatly enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, and camping. For several years, he and Helen managed a campground in Yuma, Arizona. He will be remembered for the many years he coordinated the gas engine display at the Threshermen’s celebration in Albert City.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Deanna and Rex Ingalls, of Marathon, Iowa, Linda and Howard Shelton, of Fargo, North Dakota, and Julie and Tim Lullman, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Christopher and Dana Jackson, of Marathon, Iowa, Lynn and Nicole Shelton, of Albertville, Minnesota, Misty Shelton, of Fargo, North Dakota, Tara and Gary Kron, of Schaller, Iowa, Jeannie Lullman, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jessica and Faron Woodford, of Celina, Ohio; three great grandchildren: Christopher Glade Jackson, Jr., and McKenzie and Sydni Shelton; four step great grandchildren: Michaela, Veronica, Danielle, and Alex Kron; two sisters-in-law: Susie Simeon Morgan, of Mission Viejo, California, and Joann Fast, of Brookings, South Dakota; and his brother-in-law, Jon and Patty Simeon, of Buckeye, Arizona; as well as nieces; nephews; other extended family members; and many friends.

Elden was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen, on February 1, 2004; two sons, Douglas Allen, in infancy, and Edwin Bruce Woodford; his son-in-law, Robert L. Jackson; two grandchildren, Lee Jackson, Jr., and Jon William Jackson; and his brother and sister, Archie and Mary Woodford.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 31, 2013, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City with the family present the entire time. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
