Robert W. Struve
December 17, 1920 - February 24, 2013

Robert W. Struve, age 92, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on February 24, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

The son of Hans and Emily (Hughes) Struve, Bob was born on a farm near Linn Grove, Iowa, on December 17, 1920. At the age of two, he moved with his family to the family farm north of Sioux Rapids where he lived his youth and received his education. In 1938, he graduated from Cornell High School.

On August 29, 1942, Bob married Leona Shull in Pender, Nebraska. They were blessed with five children: Jullee, Linda, Sue, Nancy, and Thomas.

From October of 1942 to January of 1945, Bob faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Promoted to first lieutenant, he, then, served as a pilot in the Army Air Force from February 1, 1945 to October 12, 1945, flying the B17 and B24 aircrafts.

Following Bob’s honorable discharge, he and Leona farmed north of Sioux Rapids until 1959 when they moved to their farm south of Rembrandt. A devoted farmer throughout his life, Bob retired in 1986.

Leona died in 1978. On December 17, 1981, Bob married Marjaleen Mansfield in Sioux Rapids. In 1984, they moved into Sioux Rapids. Marjaleen preceded him in death in January of 1995.

Bob was a longtime member of the First United Church of Sioux Rapids, the Masonic Lodge, and the Eastern Star. He will also be remembered as a former school board member. He enjoyed fishing, boating, and traveling, which included spending several winters at Mission, Texas.

His life will always be honored and cherished by his family which includes his children: Jullee (Gerald) Adams, of Odessa, Missouri, Linda (Rodney) Hatlen, of Rembrandt, Iowa, Sue (Tom) Cavanaugh, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Nancy (Mark) Pitts, of Hamburg, Iowa, and Tom (Glenda) Struve, of Rembrandt, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; his sister, Lela Anderson, of Linn Grove, Iowa; and a special step son, Monte (Cheryl) Mansfield and family, of Austin, Texas; as well as other extended family members and many friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; two granddaughters, Kris (Adams) Moore and Erica Hatlen; one brother, Richard Struve; and one sister, Vivian Bainbridge.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
